How far do you agree that the need to set up a Common Market was the most important reason to a merger between Singapore and Malaya?

I agree to a certain extent that the need to set up a Common Market was the most important reason to a merger between Singapore and Malaya but I believe that gaining independance from the British was also another reason. After the elections, some areas of the government was still under the British. To get rid of the British, Singapore needed to merge with Malaya

The PAP government wanted to eliminate all barriers to movement of both goods and factors among Singapore and Malaya, which they can import natural resources to Singapore without tarrifs because Singapore does not have any natural resource.

With the merger, Singapore would not have to pay taxes when goods were either sold or bought. This would create more jobs and the trade industry will expand.

Singapore's struggle to achieve internal self-government in the period 1945-1959 had its costs. Was it worth it? Give at least two reasons to support

I think it was worth it because Singapore finally gained self-government from the British.

First, the two highlighted major riots in the early 1950s, like the Maria Hertogh riots, were one of the acts made by Singapore, representing anti-british feelings, which concludes that Singapore was already making an effort to achieve internal self-government. However, the riots caused major destruction, and there were many injuries and casualties.
Due to this, many political parties emerged, attempting to gain the power given by the British. This act showed an effort of Singapore towards self-government.

This made the British feel that they could not control singapore anymore.

After winning the election, the new cheif minister, David Marshall was only considered as a figurehead.

Another riot occured in 1956, also known as the students' riots, and again casuing destruction and confusion. This was solved by Lim Yew Hock. The British were pleased with his actions.

The British saw LYH as a man who is capable of solving problems. When LYH went to request for self-government, the British agreed to his request and Singapore became free from British Rule.

My conslusion is that even though there were many riots, it was worth it that Singapore became free, although I would prefer living in a British ruled country.

In your opinion, what could have prevented the Maria Hertogh riots in 1950? Give at least 2 suggestions.

In my own opinion, I think that if the court was more familiar with other religions and cultures, there will not be so much chaos at that time. For example, the court did not take Maria's marriage to be legal as she was underage. This made many Malay people angry with the court and they started to riot.

The riot started at the Padang as the supporters of Che Aminah felt betrayed by what they saw as the British taking the side of the Dutch. Any European and Eurasian in sight of the Malays were attacked. The riots continued for the three days and a curfew was imposed for two weeks. 18 people were killed and 173 injured in the riot

Secondly, Reporters and photographers should have been prohibited from entering the convent to take pictures of Maria. Their pictures were printed out in many newspapers. One of these pictures included Maria bowing in front of Virgin Mary to pray. This had angered many Malays.

Should these two events not take place, there would never have been a riot

Did the Industrial Revolution affect the way people lived and worked in the 19th century for the better or the worse?

In my opinion, it happened for the better as it has changed many people's lives an it has allowed everyone to have advances in technology. For example, in the 18th century, the making of cloth by hand was a slow process but after the invention of the spinning machine, the process became easy, fast and the goods made were of better quality. This also help create jobs for people as many of them started working in factories. Another example is the steam engine. The invention of the steam engine helped ships travel at a faster speed so that the ships would take a shorter time to reach their destination. In this process, coal was burnt in the steam-engine to turn water into steam. the pressur from the steam provided energy for machines. Due to this, trains and steamships were invented.

The statue

I think the museum should put up Raffles's statue as Raffles did alot of things for Singapore. He gained permission from the Dutch to get control over Singapore. Without this, I don't think that there would ever be Tan Tock Seng in Singapore. Raffles made free trade in Singapore and this attracted alot of people from other countries to come here. He came up with a town plan for the residents of Singapore. He put William Farquah in charge of helping to stop pests from breeding and to stop fighting and robbery. Although he had to leave Singapore, I still think that he did more things to help Singapore than Tan Tock Seng. On the other hand, Tan Tock Seng set up a hospital for leapers and did many other things but he was not the one who made Singapore prosper

Who really founded Singapore

In my opinion I think that William Farhquar actually was the founding father of Singapore. He came here with Raffles but after signing the treaty, Raffles left Singapore and left Farhquar incharge. Farhquar formed a police force in Singapore to mantain order and discipline in the country. By doing this, there were only a few people who would have tried to steal from the other villagers as the police might come after them .He realised that there were many pest in Singapore like the mice an centipede. He then came up with a scheme to kill all these pests and he would reward the people who killed them. By doing this, he saved many people's lives as if not for the scheme many people would have died from these pests when the pests bit them. Whatever Farquhar did was great as Singapore transformed from an unknown island to a country which is clean and green with alots of high rise buildings compared to those in the 18th century
