In your opinion, what could have prevented the Maria Hertogh riots in 1950? Give at least 2 suggestions.

In my own opinion, I think that if the court was more familiar with other religions and cultures, there will not be so much chaos at that time. For example, the court did not take Maria's marriage to be legal as she was underage.This made many Malay people angry with the court and they started to riot.

The riot started at the Padang as the supporters of Che Aminah felt betrayed by what they saw as the British taking the side of the Dutch. Any European and Eurasian in sight of the Malays were attacked. The riots continued for the three days and a curfew was imposed for two weeks. 18 people were killed and 173 injured in the riot

Secondly, Reporters and photographers should have been prohibited from entering the convent to take pictures of Maria. Their pictures were printed out in many newspapers. One of these pictures included Maria bowing in front of Virgin Mary to pray. This had angered many Malays.

Should these two events not take place, there would never have been a riot
